Thank You!

Just want to take a second to thank all of those who are serving, who have served, and who will serve our country. For all the families of those who serve, and for all those that have lost a loved one while serving.

My mom sent me an e-mail this morning with some of the following pictures.

Have a great, safe, Memorial Day!

DIY Terra Cotta: serving tray

Here is another fun idea you can make from Terra Cotta.
A serving tray!
This is for Chips 'n' Salsa.
All's you need is:
12" terra cotta saucer
Scrapbook paper
Distress ink
Small pot for center (you'll need to plug up the hole in the bottom)

Just cut the circle the right size to fit in the center of the dish and ink the edges. Place paper in the saucer. Place saran wrap in your small pot and put salsa in. Place chips around the pot, in the saucer on top of the paper.
I didn't glue or seal the paper in the dish because I want to be able to switch the paper out for different occasions and/or food.
For example: you could easily use this as a fruit/dip platter too!
Or a vegetable tray!

You can see what I mean on my Studio 5 segment when I post that HERE later today.

It's a three-in-one serving platter!

DIY Terra Cotta: Coasters

Do you use coasters? Well if you don't, you will want to now! These are so fun and very easy to make! If you don't use them, at least they make a cute coffee table accessory!

WHAT YOU NEED:
4" terra cotta saucers
Spray paint-primer
Spray paint-color
Spray paint-sealer
Scrapbook Paper
Distress Ink
Mod Podge
Felt
Hot Glue

Here is a live demonstration first:
First, primer and spray paint your saucers and let dry

While drying, cut about a 3" circle out of both your paper and felt, enough for each of your coasters. (I just happened to have a drinking glass with a 3" top that I traced)

Next, ink the edges of all your paper circles

Then, when your saucers are done drying, mod podge the backs of your paper circles, and place them in your saucer dish. Let dry a few minutes.

Now you can mod podge the tops of your paper circles. Try not to be sloppy with this step, keep the mod podge on the paper as much as you can. But make sure you seal the edges of the paper really well.

Then when the mod podge dries, you'll want to spray the whole coaster with your sealer (polyurythane) spray paint and let dry completely.
Now you can hot glue your felt circle to the bottom of your coaster!

And Wahlaaaah!

Wasn't that easy? Here are a few reasons why you should make your own coasters rather than buy them:

1. They are cheaper! I made 5 coasters for about $5. I saw a set of 4 in Pottery Barn, and they were $30!
2. You can make them to match the room you will be keeping them in. It's so hard to find the right coasters for your home when you are a 'matchy' person!
3. You can make as many as you need! If you were buying coasters, and they sale in a set of 4, but you want six - you would have to buy 2 sets. Why buy when you can make?

DIY Terra Cotta: Cake Stand!

There are endless possibilities on how you can make your own cake stand. Here is one to make with Terra Cotta pots/saucers.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Spray Paint - primer
Spray Paint - color
Spray Paint - sealer
Mod Podge
One 10" terra cotta saucer (or your desired size)
One 7" terra cotta saucer (" ")
One 5" high terra cotta pot (" ")
One 6" high terra cotta pot (" ")
Ribbon (enough to go around the circumference of your saucers)
Gorilla Glue
Scrapbook Paper
Distress Ink
Primer your pots and saucers, and then paint them your desired color
Let dry and then glue the pots to the saucers, and let dry for at least 2 hours with pressure as shown here:
Now you are going to cut circles to the size of the insides of your two saucers. Ink the edges to distress them a bit.
Now you can either mod podge them in and then seal them as shown HERE, or you can just set the paper circles in the dish and trade them out for different occasions (birthdays, showers, holidays, etc.)

You can stack the two together so you have a double tiered cake stand, or you can put them side-by-side...your choice!
